Pest Control 101 > Treating for Ants

Carpenter Ants

Also see Fire Ants and Small Ants
Carpenter Ants are one of the largest ants in the United States. They are found throughout our country. A thorough inspection is needed to help locate where the nest may be located.

Because these ants do not travel in large numbers, do not expect to see a big trail of them. You may get lucky and see a spot around a window frame or door where they are going. Inspect trees, landscaping mulch, old wood piles, decks, stumps, wooded lots, fences, and adjacent buildings. If you are certain you know where the nest is, treat the nest with Drione Dust. Apply the dust with a Crusader Hand Duster.

If you don't know where the Carpenter Ants are coming from, use a three step treatment approach.

  1. Indoor treatment. The best option if you need to treat a nest without knowing the exact location is to use bait. The ants will come to it.

Maxforce Carpenter Ant Gel is by far the best bait on the market at this time for carpenter ants.

However, be aware, the gel is only active 2-3 weeks. Because of its unique formulation which does not use preservatives, this bait will go bad quickly once applied.

  2. Perimeter treatment. Dilute and spray Suspend SC on the foundation up two or three feet from the ground. Use a Pump Sprayer for this application. This barrier will stop current and future activity. It should be re-applied every 3-4 months.

  3. Yard treatment. The new Advance Carpenter Ant Bait Granules are amazing. They are designed to hold up against the weather and are formulated with a bait that carpenter ants like. The foraging scout and worker ants will find the bait, feed on it, and distribute it throughout the unsuspecting colonies. Apply this product in the yard where carpenter ants are active. We also offer a Granule Spreader to make this application easier.
